1/2: View from the window of our apartment, and the lovely little bookshop on the street below.
3/4: Favorite facade in town, a pharmacie made entirely of mosaic.
5: Olivia on Rue Héré, the grandest allée leading onto Place Stanislas.
6: A favorite St. Mark standing sentinel outside the cathedral in Old Town.
7: Opera Nationale de Lorraine on Place Stanislas, resplendent at sunset. The whole square is scrubbed to shining every morning (we woke to street sweepers daily) and is the center of activity late into the night; the end effect is something like a grown-up Disneyland, especially as the evening turns rose gold.
8/9: Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l’Annonciation de Nancy, inside and out.
10: A Yayoi Kusama Infinity Room at the Musée des Beaux Arts — we had it entirely to ourselves!
11: A Very Important Collage to commemorate one absolutely unparalleled evening on the Place, featuring a GLOW STICK GELATO SPOON. Life will never be the same.
I couldn’t quite figure my shocking lack of documentation from our day in Strasbourg until I remembered that it had been 103°. Misery amidst utter magic — I loved this place, all of it, honest true. But zut alors, the heat was devastating.
1. City from the cathedral rooftop, European Parliament upper left horizon. I conquered all my fears climbing this high (even if I did so very, terribly, deep-breath slowly). Also: the cathedral is celebrating its ONE THOUSANDTH anniversary this year. Europe, man.*
2/3. One of many very pretty side streets, and one of the many Amorino gelato roses eaten this trip. Green petals = basil citrus = actual heaven.
4. Timber lines and coloured plaster.
5. Open top boat tour and the sunburn to prove it, but entirely worth the morning hour. The progression from medieval timber to the Tomorrowland of Parliament is a total trip.
6. Internet: who is this street artist?! I love every line of it.
7/8. Women warriors keeping vigil over the famous astronomical clock — and one mercifully cool hour on the dark stones inside the cathedral. Watch the clock’s solar noon performance here.
9. Cathedral memorial.
10. General loveliness.
*The French have this thing with light shows? And the cathedral was illuminated each night this summer to celebrate its millennial year. Watch the whole thing here (the line illumination beginning about the 5:30 mark is exquisite, like blueprints in the sky).
